Today our Video Visionary Series article will highlight the innovative use of Enterprise Video by one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, with 470 million subscribing customers and more than 100,000 employees. Like many Qumu customers, their enterprise is immense in scope—with mobile business operations in 26 countries, partner mobile network providers in another 50 countries, and fixed operations in 17 more.
As you might expect, this telecommunications giant provides mobile, broadband and other critical communications technology to consumers and businesses, and is certainly not a newcomer to the concept of video. In fact, this company prides itself on the early adoption of numerous cutting-edge video communications technologies, and was already using desktop video conferencing and video streaming prior to approaching Qumu for help.
When the CEO wanted to conduct a company-wide town hall meeting, only about 4,000 employees could participate—less than 4% of the entire 108,000 employee workforce.
The primary issue to solve in this case was that the company’s 25 unique lines of business (LOBs) were all using video in different ways, and on their own video platforms. As you can imagine, trying to manage over two dozen channels and disparate video technology stacks was resulting in fragmentation of communications, duplication of support and a severely limited reach. One of the primary ways this issue manifested itself was internal corporate communications: whenever the CEO wanted to conduct a company-wide town hall meeting, only 4% of the 108,000 employees could participate due to technology restrictions.
Knowing first-hand that 70% of people learn most effectively thru peer-to-peer interaction, the company decided to create a seamless, integrated employee communication experience—which of course meant redesigning the existing infrastructure to break down technology barriers and smooth the way for implementation of a new, integrated video platform. The company’s primary objectives during this process were to:
- Combine all internal video technologies into a single enterprise video platform.
- Create an end-to-end content distribution system as the foundation for future company innovation and evolution.
- Bring peer-to-peer sharing and learning to life, with a solution that is easy to use for all employees regardless of technology skill level.
- Deliver high quality video to any employee, on any device and in any location.
The telecommunications company’s “Workplace 2020” vision and philosophy mandated the enterprise video platform must accommodate 5 generations of technology users—all able to seamlessly communicate and engage with each other. According to a company executive in charge of the project, Qumu offered the most attractive simplicity in user experience. “Some companies are good at streaming but don’t do live video well; others are good at live, but don’t do video portal so well. Qumu could do all three well, plus had the hunger to innovate and be at the cutting edge.” Today the company is still adding functionality and expanding video use cases as the business grows and technology needs change.
By moving to a single enterprise-grade video platform, the organization can now reach all 108,000 employees—at one time, if necessary. That’s a 2400 percent improvement! Supporting use of the enterprise video system via mobile devices was instrumental to success, particularly with so much of the workforce in the field serving customers. So when their schedules allow, individual employees can participate in live events using any mobile device, or view the event later on demand, thanks to an intelligent video delivery network which automatically adapts to the device and network connection speed.
A major benefit of moving to one enterprise video platform, of course, was the cost and effort which could be eliminated by no longer supporting multiple redundant platforms. Now all 25 lines of business can share knowledge and collaborate, not only within their business units, but on a global level. And most importantly, the telecommunications company is realizing its Workplace 2020 vision: video creation and viewing across the global community is accelerating, creating the immediacy and human connectivity required for true collaboration and engagement.
Enterprise Video Should Be Easy. Hard-to-use apps, devices and interfaces can keep employees from embracing video as a communication and collaboration tool. Make certain your enterprise video platform comes with easy-to-use tools so adoption is immediate and long-lasting.
Enterprise Video Should Be Robust. A feature-light delivery network or management tool can severely impact the employee experience. Look for a solution that is truly enterprise grade, delivers flawless performance, and offers all of the features and functionality stakeholders are requiring.
Enterprise Video Should Support All Use Cases. Live, streaming, on-demand and mobile video can all be served by one enterprise video utility. Your enterprise video network should flex to accommodate the use case, and not the other way around.
Enterprise Video Should Be Vision-Enabling. Visionary leaders can see where technology is headed. An enterprise video platform should be a future-proof, foundational solution that supports your vision and enables innovation
