Almost exactly a year ago we were talking about Facebook’s new commitment to streaming video. To recap, last year CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that by 2020 Facebook would be “mostly video” and that Facebook’s 890 million viewers were watching an average of 3 billion videos a day. Then, in April of 2015 he announced a whole host of new functionality including 3D, 360 Degree video, embedding support and mobile video advertising integration.

Since then, Facebook has stayed the course, introducing live streaming for celebrities and official pages, giving them the ability to stream live video while interacting with fans in realtime via a comment stream. According to Facebook, live videos are viewed for three times as long as on-demand videos and receive 10 times as many comments. Their live video functionality, “Live” has had boosters from celebrity chefs to astrophysicists to professional sports icons.

Recently, Facebook moved in to the next phase of their video strategy, Live for everyone.

Now you can stream your own videos, react, doodle and invite friends to live sessions. Additionally, users will be able to replay live videos, and share those recorded videos with friends. According to Zuckerberg, “(Live) is a big shift in how we communicate, and it’s going to create new opportunities for people to come together.”

As we’ve said before, the way we communicate in our daily life impacts the way we will expect to communicate in our workplace. Video use is increasing on every social platform, from Twitter to Instagram to Periscope to Facebook. Businesses are looking at these trends and seeing that finding a way to securely create, manage and deliver video will be a key element to successful communication in the 21st century office culture.
